Era 10: The Early Modern Era

  • Stickball is a sporting game played by indigenous peoples in North America such as the Chickasaw Tribe from with records of play as early as the 1700s. It is a precursor to baseball. 

  • Some key inventions include the printing press and the air pump. 

  • Many European nations started to become colonial empires and they conquered lots of native tribes around the world. This era lasted from 1500 to 1800.

  • Spanish and English Empires’ rise to colonial dominance, and they both conquered land and people in the Americas.

  • The Spanish Inquisition was a judicial institution that emerged from the Crusades in the 12th century to 1834. Its purpose was to expel heretics (meaning individuals who were not participating Roman Catholics) from Spain.    

  • During the reign of King Henry VIII, the Church of England came to prominence and power with separation from the Roman papacy in order to facilitate Henry VIII’s divorce from his first wife Queen Catherine of Aragon.
